A lot of people remember the diesel gate scandal from several years ago. Basically, Volkswagen was caught using defeat devices which circumvented the diesel emissions tests and produced false results.1
They were caught, prosecuted, and fined heavily.
But what a lot of people fail to realise is that one of the outcomes of that was an undertaking to push forward projects that would help the uptake of electric vehicles. One of these was the creation of a Charge Point Network across Europe and America.
The result of this was the Ionity and Electrify America networks.
As a reminder, the companies who were involved in the creation of these networks are:
Ionity - the BMW Group, Mercedes-Benz Group, Ford Motor Company and Volkswagen Group, but other automotive manufacturers are invited to help expand the network
Electrify America - A subsidiary of Volkswagen Group of America.
So far, so good. Two charge point networks - one across most of Europe, one across most of the United States. VW group is involved in both of them, and other OEMs are involved in one of them.
