Spare tyres. There was a point when you could be fairly sure that a spare tyre would be something you could expect a middle-aged man to have. It wasn’t a society thing, or a prestige thing, or anything like that. It was just a standard thing.
But nowadays it seems to be something you see less and less. In fact a lot of us don’t have them at all.
Which is a problem.
Because spare tyres are something that you often carry around for many, many months - even years- and wish you didn’t have to. I mean it’s extra weight, it takes up space. It often means you can’t carry as much as you originally wanted.
But there comes a day when something happens and you think to yourself ‘If I still had my spare tyre that would have turned out a lot differently’
Last week this happened to me.
Being a gentleman of slightly advancing years I was well aware of the spare tyre situation. I know of people who have gone pretty much their whole life with one. Many of them have - gladly - never had any inconvenience as a result of this.
Until the day comes when you are driving down the road and your dash lights up with a warning ‘Low pressure in the right rear wheel’.
