You’ve probably seen the memes going around on Facebook and other social media
Greta Thunberg saying “I demand everyone drive electric cars now” with a picture of some poor children up to their knees in mud, cleaning minerals, and the caption “We’re mining the cobalt for your batteries as fast as we can, Greta”
It’s a powerful image, and one which should not exist in a modern, caring society.
The problem is it’s a lie.
Before everyone jumps down my throat to tell me “No It’s not! Kids are mining for cobalt in the Democratic Republic Of The Congo!” Let me explain.
The meme and the image imply that there are children in the DRC who are being employed for the sole purpose of mining cobalt, all of which will be used in electric cars.
That’s wrong.
